The Northern Circuit Route is the longest and most comprehensive trek on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering unmatched acclimatization and panoramic scenery from multiple sides of the mountain. Starting on the western slopes at Londorossi Gate, this route initially follows the Lemosho trail before branching off to circle the quieter northern flank. Trekkers enjoy breathtaking views over Kenya and the Amboseli plains, while moving across diverse ecological zones — from rainforest to alpine desert and finally the arctic summit zone. The extended itinerary allows ample time for gradual ascent, resulting in one of the highest success rates for reaching Uhuru Peak. Unlike other routes, the Northern Circuit provides a remote and less crowded wilderness experience, culminating with the summit attempt from Kibo and descent via Mweka Gate.
Campers on the Northern Circuit Route benefit from carefully arranged mountain camps set in scenic and strategic acclimatization points such as Shira Plateau, Moir Hut, Pofu, and Third Cave. Comfortable all-weather tents, private toilet tents, and solar-lit dining tents enhance the trekking experience. Each day ends with freshly prepared hot meals crafted by the mountain chef, while mornings begin with hearty breakfasts to fuel the day’s adventure. Snacks and hot drinks are always available to refresh climbers after long treks through Kilimanjaro’s varied terrains. The combination of comfort, safety, and delicious meals ensures climbers focus entirely on the journey to Uhuru Peak.

Your adventure begins with registration at the Londorossi Gate (2,100 m), followed by a drive through farmland and rainforest to the trailhead. The trek starts gently as you hike through lush montane forest, alive with colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and a variety of exotic birds. The trail gradually ascends to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650 m), your first night on the mountain.
Hike time: 3–4 hours | Distance: ~7 km
Leaving the forest behind, the trail climbs steadily into heather and moorland zones. The scenery opens up, offering your first expansive views of Kilimanjaro’s Shira Plateau. On clear days, Mount Meru can be seen in the distance. You will camp at Shira 1 Camp (3,610 m), located on the western edge of the plateau.
Hike time: 5–6 hours | Distance: ~8 km
Today is a short and gentle hike across the beautiful Shira Plateau, one of the highlights of the Northern Circuit. This is a crucial acclimatization day, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude. You can take an optional side hike to Shira Cathedral, a large rock formation offering panoramic views of the plateau and glacier-covered summit. Overnight at Shira 2 Camp (3,850 m).
Hike time: 3–4 hours | Distance: ~7 km
The day begins with a steady ascent towards the famous Lava Tower (4,630 m), a striking volcanic rock formation. This climb provides excellent acclimatization, following the “climb high, sleep low” strategy. After a lunch stop, you descend into the remote and less-traveled Moir Valley, camping at Moir Hut (4,200 m), tucked away at the base of dramatic cliffs.
Hike time: 6–7 hours | Distance: ~14 km
A challenging morning climb takes you out of the Moir Valley, with the option to summit Little Lent Hill (4,375 m) for extra acclimatization. The trail then traverses the quieter northern slopes of Kilimanjaro, offering solitude and sweeping views of Kenya’s plains. You will reach Buffalo Camp (4,020 m) in the late afternoon.
Hike time: 5–7 hours | Distance: ~12 km
Today’s route continues eastwards across alpine desert terrain. The path is quieter, remote, and scenic, with wide-open views and fewer trekkers compared to southern routes. This long but rewarding hike ends at Third Cave Camp (3,800 m), where you rest for the evening.
Hike time: 6–8 hours | Distance: ~8 km
A steady climb takes you to School Hut (4,800 m), your base camp before the summit attempt. The atmosphere here is more barren and rugged, with temperatures dropping significantly. After an early dinner, you’ll rest and prepare for your midnight push to the summit.
Hike time: 4–5 hours | Distance: ~5 km
At around midnight, the final ascent begins. You’ll climb slowly but steadily in the cold, dark night, aiming to reach Gilman’s Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim by dawn. From there, you continue past Stella Point (5,739 m) to the ultimate goal—Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, you descend via Barafu down to Millennium Camp (3,820 m) or Mweka Camp (3,100 m) for a well-deserved rest.
Summit hike: 8–10 hours ascent + 4–6 hours descent
Your final day is a gentle descent through lush montane rainforest. The air grows warmer and thicker as you drop in altitude. At Mweka Gate (1,640 m), you will sign out and receive your summit certificate, marking your incredible achievement. A vehicle will transfer you back to Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower, celebration, and relaxation.
Hike time: 3–5 hours | Distance: ~10 km
